Gaming & E-Sports: Manuel ‘Grubby’ Schenkhuizen

20 Jan

Even though I have posted about Grubby before, I thought it would be nice to start the Gaming & E-Sports spree off with him, because he is the most famous Dutch gamer in the world. We are talking about a gamer that has done it all; feature in a Amsterdam Film Festival Documentary Beyond the Game, get admitted to the World Cyber Games Hall of Fame and win the Esports player of the year 2006 award.

The rest of this entry will detail some of his accomplishments and focus on what we can expect from him in the future!

800px-grubbyMost recent tournament results include; winning the ESL Continental Final Asia playing in Korea, winning the World Cyber Games 2008 in Germany and winning the ESL Extreme Masters Winter, again in Korea. Sounds like an impressive list, but before him winning these titles in 2008, there was a 2007 filled with less than #1 performances. We would have to go back to 2006 to see him winning an event. Even though that event was the World Series of Video Gaming and it got him $20.000 and a rolex.

According to various sites and leagues, Grubby has been one of the most important players in the Warcraft III scene, even though he had the let-down year of 2007. This guy has won Most Valuable Player awards from the WC3L (the biggest team league) for 4 editions in a row, how can we doubt this guy. Well a year is a long time, and even though he’s had a good run with the previously mentioned 3 tournaments earning him a place in the WCG Hall of Fame, his most recent tournament result wasn’t as good; he finished second place, losing 1st to Sky, his opponent from the documentary as well.  Still, being second in one of the most competitive e-sport games around is not something to be ashamed of!

Currently he occupies a spot in G7 team meet Your makers (mYm), together with Spirit Moon. And I expect to see him playing in the World Cyber Games, ESL Extreme Masters tournaments, ESWC and WC3L tournaments. I certainly wish him the best of luck, and for those of you that have no clue what Grubby’s game is about, check the link below!
