New Deus Ex works with OnLive

29 Aug

VentureBeat reports that OnLive has passed its first test as a cloud based gaming platform.

Well, you can put those fears to rest. Human Revolution is the first in what looks like a series of fantastic blockbuster titles on the launchpad this fall. The game looked gorgeous and blazed along at something north of 50 frames per second on OnLive — slightly better than the kind of performance you’d expect from a high-power PC or an Xbox 360. There were a few glitches — which is natural for a newer service — but they did not really get in the way of the gameplay.

Facebook Places gone

24 Aug

VentureBeat just mentioned that Facebook has given up the battle for location. Well, kind of. Instead of having the seperate Facebook places item on the mobile app, they will now add it; everywhere! For a company that clearly lost to FourSquare, with a reported 6% of users ever trying places, this is not really the right move.

Ah well, the feature will even be less used than the current Places one, let’s see how long this one lasts.

Smartphone market share gaining

28 Jul

I have already discussed the battle of operating systems that is going on in the  phone industry, but there is also a battle for market share going on between brands. IMS Research, who track quarterly phone sales, report that the total amount of smartphones sold will reach 420 mln phones in 2011 which accounts for 28% of the total market share. And will continue to grow to 1 bln phones by 2016.

The situation in this battle is actually quite similar to the one of operating systems:

“Clearly one of the key dynamics of the mobile handset competitive environment in recent years has been the inability of many traditional market leaders to recognize and adjust to the growing smartphone tier,” adds Builta, “The reasons for these failures vary and include everything from poorly designed and manufactured devices, unsatisfactory user interfaces, and portfolios that don’t offer products with a differentiating feature. These lapses have created opportunities for newer entrants to the market, which they have aggressively pursued.”

On raising VC money

11 Jun

The experienced partner you want as a lead investor probably has a lot of board seats. He or she spends most of the day at company meetings (board and otherwise), in interviews, and with the limited partners who actually provide the capital. I, for one, always try to reserve time in my week for hearing pitches, but it is scarce, and so if I took every first meeting myself, I’d be much less likely to actually meet the entrepreneur whose startup I wish to fund.

David Cowan wrote an excellent post for TechCrunch about the workings of a VC in selecting possible investments. Read it here.
