Apple most profitable in mobile space

3 Aug

Interesting article over on TechCrunch today discussing the real winner of the mobile wars; Apple. Not in terms of market share, not in terms of sales but in terms of profit! Not the biggest surprise in the world, Apple is generally known to price at a premium for their fantastic design, but what is surprising is that they made about 66% of all profit made in this sector.

There, you’ll find stories and data like this one from earlier today: Apple share of phone revenues increased to 28%. As Dediu’s data shows, Apple now makes more revenue in the mobile space than all of their competitors. This list includes HTC, RIM, LG, Sony-Ericsson, Samsung Motorola, and Nokia.

Smartphone market share gaining

28 Jul

I have already discussed the battle of operating systems that is going on in the  phone industry, but there is also a battle for market share going on between brands. IMS Research, who track quarterly phone sales, report that the total amount of smartphones sold will reach 420 mln phones in 2011 which accounts for 28% of the total market share. And will continue to grow to 1 bln phones by 2016.

The situation in this battle is actually quite similar to the one of operating systems:

“Clearly one of the key dynamics of the mobile handset competitive environment in recent years has been the inability of many traditional market leaders to recognize and adjust to the growing smartphone tier,” adds Builta, “The reasons for these failures vary and include everything from poorly designed and manufactured devices, unsatisfactory user interfaces, and portfolios that don’t offer products with a differentiating feature. These lapses have created opportunities for newer entrants to the market, which they have aggressively pursued.”

Video games market in transition

5 Jun

Great article on VentureBeat today about the state of the video game market. Basically they review the entire scene and conclude that the market is rapidly changing. A snippet:

And while Apple will do its best to steal the thunder of E3 by having its own Worldwide Developer Conferencein the same week, it no longer seems like the iPhone and the iPad are pummeling the traditional game industry. Apple won’t kill the consoles, or so it seems. In fact, it almost seems that, after years of struggle for control of the industry, the various factions of the game industry are becoming more and more satisfied with the concept of variety. Consumers are embracing games in any kind of form. About 67 percent of American households play games, and the average gamer is 34 years old. Forty percent of gamers are women.

Four interesting reads for week 15

12 Apr

While I try to fully resume blogging after a very buzy period at work I thought it a good idea to start sharing again. Below you will find some articles that I found to be either interesting, informative or simple nice to read. The short description should tell you all you need to know in order to decide on the relevance of it.

How to fail – Seth Goding
Just after lunch I was discussion risk-aversion with my colleague. After returning to my desk I found this post of Seth waiting for me. In this post he basically links failing to success, without it you don’t stand a chance, and gives some ideas on how to fail more (ultimately) succesfully.

Zune HD to fail?

19 Sep

Microsoft has launched its latest installment of the iPod copying device Zune. The Zune HD seems to be the same as the iPod Touch which latest version I wrote about earlier, but with one major problem; no app store. (more…)

iPod Touch; gaming device of the near future?

13 Sep

With just short of 22.000 games available on its App Store, the position of the iPod Touch as a gaming device is really taking off. With the two major competitors only having 3680 (Nintendo DS) and 607 (Sony’s PSP) Apple is taking the lead as one of the biggest mobile gaming platforms. The recent iPod Touch price cut only reinforces Apple’s position by allowing for more people to own their entry-level device. (more…)
